A Simple Winter Lawn Care Routine

Work through these steps to keep your lawn healthy and presentable until the warm season returns.

• Tackle Winter Grass Early Winter grass (Poa annua) sneaks in fast. Apply a selective winter grass herbicide as soon as you spot it, before it flowers and sets seed. Products containing Endothal treat around 200m2 and you will usually need two to three applications. Note that these products cannot be used on kikuyu or fescue lawns, so check your variety first.
• Control Broadleaf Weeds Bindii, creeping oxalis, clover, catsear, cudweed, dandelion and thistles are all common winter visitors. A broadleaf herbicide suitable for your grass type will sort most of them out in one pass. Ready-to-use hose-on bottles make application straightforward, and most treat up to 200m2 per litre. Always check the label to confirm the product is safe on your specific turf variety.
• Consider a Foliar Fertiliser for a Quick Boost Even in winter, a liquid foliar fertiliser can correct nutrient deficiencies quickly and give stressed turf a lift. Look for products suitable for all warm-season grasses including buffalo, kikuyu, couch and zoysia. Apply as directed on the label.
• Add Iron for Colour and Strength Iron-based bio-stimulants help maintain that deep green colour and support lateral growth during cooler months. Apply monthly when the lawn is showing active growth or when you notice pale patches. A 2.5 litre concentrate typically covers up to 1,250m2.
• Use a Lawn Colourant if Needed If your lawn has gone off-colour and you want it looking its best right now, a natural grass pigment product can restore green colour quickly. These products deliver organic pigment into the leaf tissue and, once dry (usually within two hours in full sun), they will not bleed or run. One application can last up to three months and the products are safe for people, pets and the environment.
• Support Root Health for a Stronger Spring Winter is actually a great time to support root development so your lawn bounces back strongly in spring. Products combining liquid fertilisers, seaweed extracts and wetting agents help stimulate root growth and rehydrate dry or thin-looking lawns. They suit all turf varieties and can be used year-round.
