The plan, season by season
Rates are per 100m² unless noted. Always read the label before you apply anything.
- Autumn Feed with LSA Premium Fertiliser (1 to 2.5kg), ProPlus Carbon Fertiliser (2.5kg) or Exceed Liquid Fertiliser every 3 to 4 weeks, and get granular fertiliser down before temperatures drop too far. Apply a pre-emergent before temperatures start to fall: Oxafert or Oxafert Plus (4kg) stops winter grass before it starts. ColourGuard Plus keeps the colour up, and Iron Guard Plus goes on as autumn turns to winter. Grub Guard Ultimate helps prevent lawn grubs, and Battle Insecticide treats them.
- Winter Raise your mowing height, water only if the lawn needs it, and keep foot traffic off dormant grass where you can. Be proactive with weeds: All Purpose Weed Control or Estate Herbicide for broadleaf weeds, and Ferris WG Herbicide for winter grass. ColourGuard Plus holds the colour through the cooler months. If a disease such as winter fusarium appears, a fungicide like Vacate can treat and prevent it.
- Spring Don't fertilise too early. Wait until the grass is out of dormancy, then feed with LSA Premium Fertiliser, ProPlus Carbon Fertiliser or Exceed Liquid Fertiliser. Lawn Soaker and Lawn Kelper every 3 to 4 weeks keep the soil wet and in good condition. Oxafert or Oxafert Plus (4kg) prevents winter grass, and Sedge Control treats nutgrass. Grub Guard Ultimate and Battle Insecticide cover lawn grubs. Leave dethatching and topdressing until mid to late spring.
- Summer Water efficiently: in the morning before the heat of the day, with a deep soak less often. Raise your mowing height if temperatures are extreme, and avoid herbicides in extreme heat. Feed with LSA Premium Fertiliser or Exceed Liquid Fertiliser, keep up Lawn Soaker and Lawn Kelper every 3 to 4 weeks, and use Lawn Rescue for a quick boost when the lawn needs it. All Purpose Weed Control or Estate Herbicide handles broadleaf weeds, Sedge Control handles nutgrass, and Primo HG PGR slows growth and suppresses seed heads.
Mixing products safely
Granular products (LSA Premium Fertiliser, ProPlus, Oxafert, Oxafert Plus and Grub Guard Ultimate) can go on at the same time and be watered in well together. The one exception worth planning around: apply Oxafert a few weeks before or after your regular fertiliser, so the lawn doesn't get too much nitrogen at once.
Lawn Kelper and Lawn Soaker can be applied together, then lightly watered in. Iron Guard Plus should always go on by itself, because iron doesn't mix well with other liquids. Exceed and Lawn Rescue are absorbed through the leaf, so apply them separately; if they're watered in soon after, they're taken up by the roots instead of the leaf. ColourGuard Plus can be tank mixed with Exceed or Lawn Rescue, as long as nothing in the mix needs watering in.
Don't mix herbicides together, and always apply them at the label rate. Once a herbicide has dried on the leaf you can apply another, but keep other products such as liquid fertiliser off the lawn that day. Give the herbicide time to dry and absorb before anything else goes on, water included.
